Southern Mainland
Here's where things really get underway. After teleporting away from the valley of Stonegate, you start in the Castle of Lord British not far from where Hennington, his seneschal, stands.
Because of circumstances of plot linearity, you should search out the entirety of this region before taking the cleansed Rune of Compassion to Raven at the docks. Once that is done, you won't be back for a while. The second time you return not much changes. But as the quest moves forward, each time you return, something, even several things have changed, both in Britain and in Paws. This includes the availability of certain bits of useful information.
Some notes on care and economy:
I once thought to mark every light source I came across in this listing. That may have been prudent but I found it unnecessary. First, just pick up any torch or lantern you happen across, douse it when unneeded to keep it fresh until the next time. Then you may come across some glowing equipment, and I mean glowing all the time! By the time you return the second time to this region, not only can you have found a light source any time you needed it, but the Light spell will be available as well as means to replenish mana for casting and maintaining it.
Enemies in the south mainland initially are, on the whole, cake (as in "a piece of..."). With only a few exceptions. When newbie, everyone can take you out without much thought. Wolves are dangerous as are thieves and trolls. Use new armour when you find it, you shouldn't pay in the shops for it as you can usually find an equivalent somewhere along the way. Avoid the creeper plant unless you can sneak up behind it and be quick about killing it. But, if nothing else, stay away from giant crabs and the giants in the mountains north of Paws. More skill, stronger armour and nastier weapons are needed. I'm not saying a newbie can't take one out with certain systems, but anything that can strike a deathblow on the first hit is to be respected appropriately.
